"Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be."

nifty thrifty

today after work, i rolled by my favorite spot- ye ol' thrift store. i have a routine when i walk in the door...quick stop to the purses to see if they have any standout clutches, roll through the textiles such as blankets, tablecloths, ect and then my mission begins. i strictly work the perimeter of the store where all the non-clothing items are housed. don't get me wrong, this place is PACKED with clothing, which happens to be super organized, cheap and overall on point for a thrift, but i don't have much patience for that biz. i go in, i get out.

i rolled by the lp's to see if there was anything good...or anything worth taking a picture of. today it was mostly the latter:

he's jazzy...he native...he's charlie barnet.

check out that organ!

honor your partner and learn some rope skipping, ball bouncing. hugh? i do like the graphics though. maybe i'll have to go back for this one to put up in the guest room.

i bought these two paint by number ponies. love them! they may not be "originals" but they're cool and i like the brushstrokes of the painter. really!

here's a sweet lp i picked up. the cover sold me. i haven't listened to it yet but i really don't care what it sounds like. the bf will be stoked on this one.

back of the lp: california gold. nice!

this ceramic baby is sweet. it's signed on the bottom but i can't make it out. regardless, the colors are very pretty and it has a beautiful finish

each side has an ocean looking round circle. i told myself i'd sell this on etsy, but i don't know now....

walnut cheese tray. back says, "ozark treasures- highway 65, ozark, mo." hummmm... this baby will be for sale on my esty site.

old school luv

today after meeting with my boss who just returned from a trip to utah, i was given this tasty bar to sample. he's homies with the owners of pro bar and always giving me their yummy treats to try. this is one of their newest flavors and by far my favorite.

gluten free, vegan, organic ingredients, 6g of fiber and 370 calories per bar. i didn't necessarily think peanut butter when i ate this but more nuts. probably because there are raw cashews, raw sunflower seeds, raw sesame seeds, almonds, raw brazil nuts, organic pumpkin and hemp seeds...the list goes on. as for the J in the name: pineapple, dates, papaya, raspberry puree and apples are in the mix. soooo yummy...and filling. no i'm not getting paid or kicked back any goods for this review but i will be on the hunt for more. try it if you see it. you'll thank me.

and how cool is the package?!

i wish

the bf would let me hang something over the bed. he doesn't want to be bludgeoned in the middle of the night while we peacefully sleep. seeing that we live over a nasty fault line i guess i can't blame him. maybe i'm going to have to stick to painting the wall black. black like my heart....ahahahhahahahahahhahaha

errrrrr

some days thing just don't go your way. today is my day.

it started simple enough. i went to ikea to buy

for our newly created dining room (it was an undercover office before). i thought this baby was going to look great under our table and would tie in with the living room decor as well as the new yellow and white dresser, also in the dining room (picture to come) i scored for $60.

so i showed up at the big yellow and blue box, otherwise known as ikea, went straight for the rugs, rolled this baby out on the floor and had serious second thoughts. it kinda made me dizzy. too much pattern. just too much. shit. i started to paroose the other choices and nothing was standing out....other than the

large knotted jute rug that we already have in the bedroom. it would look good in the dining room and it was $79 cheaper and larger but was it too big? i was over hemming and hawing so i said "f it!", grabbed the original rug and hopped back on the rain drenched 405.

yep. it's way too much. i moved the dining room table and chairs...as well as the 10,000lb dresser by myself to get that damn rug situated so i could make sure it wasn't going to work. that's affirmative. you're an idiot for not sticking to your instincts! now i don't want to deal with moving the furniture and rolling it up. i'm waiting for the bf to walk in the door from work so i can give him a kiss then ask for a couple favors: move furniture and come with me to ikea. i need a partner this time.

so when it's all done, i WILL have pictures. promised. oh, and while "rearranging" my balcony this afternoon my worm composter knocked over and spilled about 1/2 gallon of "worm tea" on my feet. like i said, some days things just don't go your way.

day 3 of intense southern california storms which i'm enjoying from inside my house.

today, i can't keep my mind off the people of Haiti. such total and complete disaster. no storm or flooding we're experiencing right now, which has swallowed up the local news, can compare to what they're facing. for whatever good it may do, i send them strength and LOVE. peace be with you....

butternut squash chowda

long beach has had it's fair share of blustery weather lately so i FINALLY feel like winter is here as well as soup season. this is the second soup i've made this week and i'm 2 for 2! this delicious recipe is from my friend Ashley's blog. try it!

my tweaks:
the recipe calls for a 32 oz. jar of butternut squash puree. i boiled 3, 12oz. bags of trader joes pre-cut butternut squash. a BIG time saver to buy it this way considering this is one difficult veggie to "peel". once the squash was fork tender, i drained it and pureed it with a hand blender. it came to a perfect 32 ozs!

4 tsp of salt is added to the onions and celery which will eventually flavor the entire pot. maybe i had a saltier chicken broth than the authors, but next time i'll try less. probably 2 tsp and add more at the end if needed.

i used turkey bacon...only because it's what i had. (i don't descriminate against the swine). i think it added a really nice flavor, so for less fat, give it a try.

thank you Ashley for sharing! i can't wait to try your saffron chicken next.

south bay heeeeeey!

found this pic of the stoned rollers in my neighboring city of redondo beach. only in '75!

today's mail

this lp came today in mint condition. i'm blasting this song while the rain pours outside. pretty much perfect.

thanks Mr. Haack for the recommendation!

$40 holler

sometimes ikea is rad. sometimes ikea is jangy. they come through in a pinch when you need furniture quick that is cool looking but overall a band-aid. i personally prefer furniture for the long haul. furniture that will stand up to the test of time; something i don't have to replace every 2 years. well in walks OLUNDA.

this heavy duty, well framed piece with raised letters is a win. it works with my casa and it works with my pocket. hells to the yeah.
