the power of the sun

SOL+STICE

derives from a combination of Latin words meaning "sun" + "to stand still." as the days lengthen, the sun rises higher and higher until it seems to stand still in the sky.

as a major celestial event, the Summer Solstice results in the longest day and shortest night of the year.

**enjoy this day of change. we're on the cusp of a new season and new adventures.**

reuse recycle

my mom is in carmel this week/end staying with friends while working at the US Open. she sent me these photos yesterday from her friend's yard. my mom know i'm a succulent freak so these were right up my alley. super clever use of recycled objects. nice work!

ladies only

today my good friend soundmangroupie had a ladies only cocktail party @ her casita. her requirements from me were to bring some lp's, my cocktail shaker (i forgot), my headphones and a bottle of vodka. she provided food galore, friends and later in the day... the lakers.

what a great idea on a sunday afternoon! we took turns being dj for the day while we sipped our cocktails and nibbled on snacks. these records caught my eye and thought they'd catch yours too...

my mom

about once every two weeks i receive an envelope in the mail from my mom. i'm sure my postal carrier gets a kick out of her "decor" on the outside. sometimes she'll emphasize my name with a giant cut out J, other times it's a phrase like she used above. it's usually got a nice ransom note vibe. she reads her local newspaper as well as the NY Times plus a plethora of magazines which she gets her flair from.

(this picture is cut out from a magazine. my mom does have art skills)
instead of a letter or even a quick note, i get articles, ad's pertaining to what's going on in my life at the moment and an occasional comic strip.

the articles always relate to my interests and when i was in college, my schooling. i was an anthropology major and an art history major before that so you can imagine her subject matter.

she usually adds her own note at the top and sometimes underlines or highlights the important parts. she's kind of like my own cliff notes.

it's her way to teach me something from afar. my mom is one of those people that likes to pass on her knowledge. really to anyone that will listen. instead of telling me her lesson, or writing it down, she sends me an article about it.

i save many of the articles she sends, mostly for her humorous notes. and i ALWAYS save the really good envelopes. they are classic. i know some day she won't be here to send these bits of wisdom and light so i take comfort that i'll have her mind with me later in life.

kale chips!

i had a head of curly kale hiding in my fridge and yesterday decided to put it to use! i've never made kale chips before but heard good things about them. super healthy and they satisfy that salty, crispy craving. i'm in!

wash the kale and remove the leave from the stem.
break into smaller pieces.
put in a bowl and add about 2t. olive oil and a decent pinch of salt.
use your hands and make sure that all the leaves are coated with the combo.
place on a cookie sheet, making sure not to overlap the leaves (the will steam), and place in a 370* oven.
cook for about 15 min or until they start to get brown on the edges.

looks kinda freaky but tastes fantastic! even the super green ones in the picture are CRISPY.

i also roasted some beets yesterday from my farm basket. little s&p, 400* oven for about an hour (they were large beets) and wa-la. i'm going to use them in a salad (sans lettuce) with orange slices, red onions, thyme and a simple vinaigrette made w/ white balsamic and orange juice.

bicycle! bicycle!

the past 3 years i've been cruising a 10 speed which was generously given to me by my old neighbor. it was in good "garage" condition which i took to the next level. we've been on numerous adventures together and it has always been reliable whip. problem: too big. my old neighbor is a 6ft man so as you might guess the frame fit his body best. i've been searching craigslist for a ride built for a 5'8" lady for quite some time and monday she appeared.

pretty much mint condition. this schwinn model was the first to use quick release wheels-a huge advance at the time. it also has a cool generator attached to the back of the frame to power the rear light. original everything with the price of a well used bike. SCORE. and it's YELLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
