serendipity

–noun
1. an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident.
2. good fortune; luck

yesterday while doing the dishes in my kitchen, i was thinking to myself how much i was enjoying the rain. i looked up and out my window over the sink and saw this. living in oregon for 6 years, i saw my fare share of rainbows between the storms. magical as always....

teach the children

i am EXCITED. hey, what's new, i know but this has really got me good. i subscribe to a master gardeners mailing list and they recently sent me a link to a bunch of schools in LA County that have school gardens. most are far from my casa, but one dear friends is in my backyard- LONG BEACH! Los Cerritos Elementary School to be exact.

i contacted the garden coordinator/teacher behind the project who also happens to be a master gardener. she said she'd LOVE extra help so i'm now in the process of filling out my school volunteer application as well as getting my required TB test. what fun it will be to not only work with the munchkins but teach them about gardening and growing your own food. YEE HAW!

bombs away

(this is straight up lifted word for word, picture for picture from Fun Time Happy Garden Explosion but i think it's genius, simple and super appropriate for our rainy season upon us.)

Hello, I am an empty lot. I exist in your neighborhood. I'm just a big patch of dirt and some trash. I make my neighbors feel uneasy and sad. No one likes me and it makes me sad too. All over, it is a lose-lose situation.

But maybe you can help me? All I need are some seed bombs. They're cheap and easy to make. And if you do it right, they are completely self automated and great for the environment. They will be a sight for sore eyes and they will make everyone happy. Especially the butterflies.

Seed Bombs Ingredients
1) powdered clay
2) worm castings
3) wildflower seeds indigenous to the area
4) water
5) mixing container
6) stick

How to Make a Seed Bomb
1) mix 5pt powder clay, 5pt worm castings, 1pt seeds in a mixing container.
2) add just enough water to make a nice muddy clay consistency
3) roll up the mixture into little balls like gum balls
4) let dry in a cool dry place for like 3 days
5) throw them in empty fields.

How they Work
A seed bomb is a little capsule with everything you need to grow a plant all bundled up. The clay has lots of root-encouraging nutrients. The Worm Castings will give the seeds a nice fertilizer, good for land that hasn't been cultivated or worked on for a while. The indigenous seeds are custom made for your area. They will know how to grow given the conditions.

Now all they need is a nice rain. The perfect time to throw these is right before a light rainy season. The rain will melt the clay to expose the seeds, and your seed bombs will grow.

EXCITED x10

just when i thought i had missed any possible showing of "Visual Acoustic" in the LA area, my prayers were answered by the movie gods. literally 5 minutes ago i found out there will be saturday/sunday showings of the film @ 11am both days at
Laemmle's Playhouse 7
673 East Colorado Blvd.
Pasadena, 91101

Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, VISUAL ACOUSTICS celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, the world’s greatest architectural photographer, whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream.

Stahl House (CHS#22)” photographed by Julius Shulman (1960)

Shulman, who passed away this year, captured the work of nearly every modern and progressive architect since the 1930s including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner and Frank Gehry. His images epitomized the singular beauty of Southern California’s modernist movement and brought its iconic structures to the attention of the general public.

reading rainbow

Photobucket
i am currently reading a beautiful design book, "Living in Style Without Losing Your Mind" by Marco Pasanella. his design philosophy is simple and clear and on point as far as i'm concerned.

(Marco's house. Notice the 12ft ladder in the mirror's reflection which leads to a shelf with a cookie jar. humor and design intermingling.)
"To have a great home, the point is, you don't need a platinum card for flair for fabrics. You need to know how to see"-MP

"To be really stylish, you need a touch of bad taste."-MP

"Continuous primping, poofing, folding, unfolding, stashing and dragging are signs that you are working too hard to be comfortable."-MP

"Burnished leather. Apple Pie. Miles Davis. Design is primarily a visual medium, it is not exclusively so. To be truly great, a design has to stimulate all our senses."-MP

"To be smart with money and gentle on the earth are not special hats but integral parts of everyday design."-MP

"To design is to play, to try things out, to take risks."-MP

"A home's power comes not just from what is seen but from what is treasured."-MP (like those chairs i lust over)
