the 20 year old guerrilla garden
old growth
the man with a plan...scott
scott has been working this plot light years before guerrilla gardening was GUERRILLA GARDENING. he's been talking about the need to do some work here to clear out the weeds, re-plant as well as give a home to the many cuttings he propagates in his backyard. yesterday was the day.
it really blows my mind every time i show up to one of these events, the dedication scott has to the cause. the time and money it takes to grow the plants, the work to load and unload his truck with tools, trash bags and the stars of the show-the succulents and cacti, then the work to put them in the ground. all of this without a single dollar from the city and very little recognition. it's only been the last couple of years he's started to get help with his johnny appleseed efforts. what a legacy he's leaving behind!
i seriously applaud his great efforts as well as the volunteers that show up to these digs to make a change in our local community. i'm sore today from 3 hours of digging but it feels so good and i wouldn't want to feel any other way.
check out this old growth garden for yourself on Loynes Ave between PCH and Bixby Village Dr. in long beach as well his website for more eye candy. you'll be amazed.

nascar in my backyard

kinda. the long beach grand prix is already howling downtown and my 3 1/2 mile buffer doesn't seem to be enough. sweet. instead of hitting the circuit with the rest of so. cal's race fans this weekend, we're going to skip town for the day and go on a hike.
the bf has been telling me about a hike off the ortega hwy in the cleveland national forest for a long time so i figured what better time to go? i've never been there, flowers are blooming, weather isn't too hot yet and best of all....no car noise. i'm game.
after this adventure, we'll come home to a free show @ my local (and two blocks away!) record store, fingerprints, to see dios malos preform. maybe hit up some sushi after...call it a day. i'm still a little under the weather from that nasty bug that got me earlier in the week so i'm laying off the bevy's. =I
sunday- guerrilla gardening with the crew in lb for a gift back to the mother we call earth. she takes a lot of shit from us humans. good to hook her up from time to time.

let's get this party started!
(yes, that's oatmeal underneath all the flair)
big weekend ahead...
tomorrow i'll be cruising the lb harbor on a boat...in the rain...with about 80 people and two dj's for a big going away party for my friend emily. emily is venturing down under, away from her job in costa mesa, to the office where the aussies play. should be a good one.
sunday:
new guerrilla garden dig with birthday boy, ahem man, scott and crew. if you're around, i highly suggest you come check it out. great fun, cool people, beautifying the city...what could be better.
details:
9am-12pm
7208 Carson St, Lakewood, CA on google maps.
This is the new spot we are going to be planting a guerrilla garden in on Sunday February 28th at 9 AM. It's at the San Gabriel bike trail entrance at Carson st. I think you can park in the Walmart parking area near the gas station and use the foot trail to get to the spot. It's a bit large so we most likely won't get it all planted in one shot. So we'll be coming back at a later date to finish it off. If you have a tool you like to work (dig) with please bring it but if you don't have any don't worry because there will be plenty of tools to go around. All plants will be supplied by SoCal Guerilla Gardening as this is a full sun - no water location. It's right next to the Town Center so maybe we can go out to lunch after we're done.
and maybe, just maybe, get a dog from the pound somewhere between all of this.....
HOLLER!

ragga ragga
7 years ago the Ragga Muffin Festival brought me to long beach for amazing music and introduced me to someone who convinced me to move to southern california from monterey.
fast forward to 2010 and i'm leaps and bounds from where i was then...in a good way. life is crazy how one small decision you make to go somewhere, talk to someone, see something, can change your life path so drastically.
so this saturday and sunday brings the 29th annual reggae festival to long beach- my home. the bf and i will be there sunday, soaking in all the music, friends, jamaican food and goodness life has brought us.

guerrillas by the river
down by the river....

before
my best find of the day. luckily it was a seashell and not a crack pipe.
scott's propagations
adriana of anarchy in the garden...and proud GG and her husband hector trespassing..but in a good way.
the littlest GG's of the day who stole my heart. overheard by the little girl, "i know how to dig a hole. i want to dig!" and dig they did!
too cute!

adriana and i soaking up the sun after a successful dig

after
guerrillas on the move
the Ovation Channel was there filming the whole thing...look for it soon
trash collected from the site.
yet another successful planting with a great group of people on an amazingly beautiful southern california day. we are expecting rain next week so our plants will get a good start in this world.
cheers sidewalk doctors!
