the 20 year old guerrilla garden

old growth

the man with a plan...scott

scott has been working this plot light years before guerrilla gardening was GUERRILLA GARDENING. he's been talking about the need to do some work here to clear out the weeds, re-plant as well as give a home to the many cuttings he propagates in his backyard. yesterday was the day.

it really blows my mind every time i show up to one of these events, the dedication scott has to the cause. the time and money it takes to grow the plants, the work to load and unload his truck with tools, trash bags and the stars of the show-the succulents and cacti, then the work to put them in the ground. all of this without a single dollar from the city and very little recognition. it's only been the last couple of years he's started to get help with his johnny appleseed efforts. what a legacy he's leaving behind!

i seriously applaud his great efforts as well as the volunteers that show up to these digs to make a change in our local community. i'm sore today from 3 hours of digging but it feels so good and i wouldn't want to feel any other way.

check out this old growth garden for yourself on Loynes Ave between PCH and Bixby Village Dr. in long beach as well his website for more eye candy. you'll be amazed.

let's get this party started!

(yes, that's oatmeal underneath all the flair)

big weekend ahead...
tomorrow i'll be cruising the lb harbor on a boat...in the rain...with about 80 people and two dj's for a big going away party for my friend emily. emily is venturing down under, away from her job in costa mesa, to the office where the aussies play. should be a good one.

sunday:
new guerrilla garden dig with birthday boy, ahem man, scott and crew. if you're around, i highly suggest you come check it out. great fun, cool people, beautifying the city...what could be better.
details:
9am-12pm
7208 Carson St, Lakewood, CA on google maps.
This is the new spot we are going to be planting a guerrilla garden in on Sunday February 28th at 9 AM. It's at the San Gabriel bike trail entrance at Carson st. I think you can park in the Walmart parking area near the gas station and use the foot trail to get to the spot. It's a bit large so we most likely won't get it all planted in one shot. So we'll be coming back at a later date to finish it off. If you have a tool you like to work (dig) with please bring it but if you don't have any don't worry because there will be plenty of tools to go around. All plants will be supplied by SoCal Guerilla Gardening as this is a full sun - no water location. It's right next to the Town Center so maybe we can go out to lunch after we're done.

and maybe, just maybe, get a dog from the pound somewhere between all of this.....
HOLLER!

INSPIRATION

today i went to church. the church of guerrilla gardening with reverend Scott Bunnell-plant propagator extraordinaire and 20 year GG veteran. this man is a force of inspiration like i haven't run across in YEARS. the work he's done in long beach and surrounding cities is a legacy of it's own.

today's green sermon was one i will take with me and spread. the people i met today were a mix of young and old, highly experienced and novice. all worked together towards the betterment of long beach. street doctors as i'd like to call them. i can not wait for the next GG project and the interesting people i will meet. THANK YOU SCOTT!!!

ANYONE can be a guerrilla gardener

all plants provided by Scott

Scott in action. documentary film crew recording it all

Peter, a neighbor to the plot and Cambodian immigrant, not only provided water but a helping hand and smile. he was a farmer in his native country and grew all the food he and his family would eat. Peter was beyond happy to have this new garden next to his house.

Peter dug in and joined us.
