since i've got them...

Brussels Sprouts with Vinegar-Glazed Red Onions

Ingredients
Serves 4
  • 1 (about 10-ounce) basket brussels sprouts
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced lengthwise
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

Directions

  1. Trim outer leaves and stems from brussels sprouts, and discard. Bring a medium pot of water to a boil, and add salt. Meanwhile, prepare an ice-water bath. Add brussels sprouts to boiling water, and cook until tender but still bright green, about 4 minutes. Remove from heat, drain, and plunge into ice-water bath to cool. Drain well, and cut in half.
  2. Heat 1/2 tablespoon butter and 1/2 tablespoon olive oil in a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Add brussels sprouts, and cook, tossing occasionally, until they are brown and crisp on the edges, about 3 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and transfer to a large bowl. Cover with aluminum foil to keep warm.
  3. Add remaining 1/2 tablespoon each butter and oil to the same pan over medium-low heat. Add onions, and cook, tossing occasionally, until wilted and transparent, about 3 to 4 minutes. Add vinegar (stand back to avoid the fumes), and stir to loosen any brown bits on bottom of pan. Cook until vinegar is reduced and the onions are glazed, about 30 seconds.
  4. Add onions to brussels sprouts, and toss well. Serve immediately

cauliflower on acid

this week's CSA gave us a Romanesco cauliflower. it's almost too beautiful to eat...but i will. i've been doing some research on the web to see if there are any standout recipes for this lil psychedelic delight. it appears it can be used as any other cauli would, roasting is particularly good. apparently it has a nutty, sweeter flavor than the standard variety. i would actually love to grow these as ornamental plants. so damn beautiful!

beach greens-1st delivery

i used to live in Eugene, Or. and was a big fan of CSA's. i moved back to California in '01 and haven't been part of one since. LB has their own CSA- Beach Greens so i decided to give it a try last week. i'm already a regular at 3 farmer's markets near my house each week but damnet, i get busy with life and forget to stop by from time to time. now the market is coming to my house.

i've been anxiously waiting to see what will be in my first crate so i can figure out what i'm making for dinner tonight! as you can see, my options are wide and i can not wait to try it all.

first peek inside the crate--->YUM!

psychedelic veggies, my fav!

SCORE!

why buy new when there is so much amazing used furniture, decor, clothes, music, appliances....i could go on and on......in this world?! cheers to thrift stores.

today's acquisition (5 tiffany blue Polish blown glass vases $5/each) was good.

a night of bliss

i am a fan of all things coconut. Luna and Larry's Coconut Bliss (eugene, or.) is no exception to the rule. in fact, they are the rule. i entered a contest to have a Night of Bliss party at my house (winners in all 50 states) and WON! i called up the troops to come sample the delights and boy were they impressed. i also broke out the Winter Fraulein, a drink East Coast Fraulein created about 3 winters ago. (spiced apple cider from TJ's and Mt. Gay rum-oh my!)

Toppings....

Trader Joe's lemon cookies-soooooooo good

setting the mood....

AOC

since east coast Fraulein is in LA for the week on business, what better excuse to visit my fav eatery, AOC?! i've been here three times now and each experience is tops in my book. my two dinner companions, LL and SB, were equally thrilled with the pick and each of us are dreaming of our next visit back.

now grab a napkin because i'm about to tell you a tale of what we ate and drool will most certainly start to drip out of that open mouth of yours.

cheese:
goat cheese, dried figs and saba- you can't go wrong with this combo
roasted dates, parmesan and bacon- a MUST during any visit here
fried tetilla, quince paste and romesco- like a mini grilled cheese gone to heaven

salad:
baby gems, dungeness crab, avocado, lime- fresh, light, clean. YUM.

fish:
market fish (striped bass), spicy chickpeas, fresh yogurt- more please!

grain:
farro and black rice with pinenuts and currants- first taste of farro, a grain which is a complete protein. lovely with the other ingredients.

from the wood burning fire:
brioche with prosciutto, gruyère and egg- blow your socks off good. hangover cure of the century.

dessert:
ibarra chocolate cake with spiced pepitas and dulce de leche ice cream

wine:
Flowers Vineyard- 2007 Perennial Blend- ****

AOC
8022 W. 3rd St.
Los Angeles, California

with full bellies we walked down 3rd st. towards my car and what should my wandering eyes appear----->

Dynasty anyone?

apparently this neighborhood has an infestation of head lice because the Hair Fairies, as they like to call themselves, is an entire shop dedicated to be "head lice helpers". i couldn't make this shit up.

across the street from the hair fairies was old homo riot

handbag anyone?

the food, the laughs, the catching up....all so fun. LOVE my friends. thanks ladies for another memorable night. now i'm off to work that 2000 calorie meal off.

24th Street School Garden from White On Rice Couple on Vimeo.

AMAZING

INSPIRATION

today i went to church. the church of guerrilla gardening with reverend Scott Bunnell-plant propagator extraordinaire and 20 year GG veteran. this man is a force of inspiration like i haven't run across in YEARS. the work he's done in long beach and surrounding cities is a legacy of it's own.

today's green sermon was one i will take with me and spread. the people i met today were a mix of young and old, highly experienced and novice. all worked together towards the betterment of long beach. street doctors as i'd like to call them. i can not wait for the next GG project and the interesting people i will meet. THANK YOU SCOTT!!!

ANYONE can be a guerrilla gardener

all plants provided by Scott

Scott in action. documentary film crew recording it all

Peter, a neighbor to the plot and Cambodian immigrant, not only provided water but a helping hand and smile. he was a farmer in his native country and grew all the food he and his family would eat. Peter was beyond happy to have this new garden next to his house.

Peter dug in and joined us.
